Principles
This is a static website without accounts, forms or cookies. No personal profiles are created. When you visit, technically required data (in particular your IP address) is transmitted to the services listed below; the legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Hosting
The site is operated by an external hosting provider. Server logs (IP address, timestamp, requested page, user agent) are stored briefly to keep the service running and to analyse errors.
Map rendering (OpenFreeMap)
The base map loads map tiles from the OpenFreeMap service (openfreemap.org), which receives your IP address in the process; according to its own statements, OpenFreeMap keeps no log files and sets no cookies. Fonts, icons and style data are served from our own server.
Terrain shading at medium zoom levels loads elevation tiles from the AWS Open Data program (Amazon Web Services, USA), which receives your IP address in the process.
Content from Wikipedia/Wikimedia
River pages load short descriptions and images from servers of the Wikimedia Foundation (San Francisco, USA), which receives your IP address. This only happens when you open an individual river page.
Web analytics (Plausible)
We use Plausible Analytics (Plausible Insights OÜ, Västriku tn 2, 50403 Tartu, Estonia) for reach measurement — a privacy-friendly, cookie-free service that stores no personal data and builds no cross-device profiles. IP addresses are not stored; only aggregated numbers (page views, country of origin, browser type) are evaluated.
Location feature
The locate button on the map uses your browser's geolocation — only after your explicit confirmation in the browser dialog. The coordinates are used purely locally to centre the map and are neither stored nor transmitted.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (for Saxony: the Saxon Commissioner for Data Protection and Transparency). Since this site itself stores no personal data, please direct any requests by email to the controller named above.
