About Open Earth Atlas

Open Earth Atlas is an interactive atlas of the world’s rivers, lakes, mountain ranges and countries — free to use, with no account and no cookies.

What the atlas shows

Every entry has a page with a map, key facts and context: how long a river is, which countries it flows through, which lakes it feeds, and how it compares with others. Country pages gather a country’s geography; rankings show the largest, longest and deepest entries in the world and in individual countries.

Open data, not our own claims

Every value comes from open sources — mainly OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, HydroLAKES, the GMBA Mountain Inventory and Natural Earth. The atlas brings them together, derives rankings and comparisons, and shows openly where sources disagree. The methodology page explains the details.

Because the data is open, anyone can improve it: a wrong value on Wikidata or an imprecise outline in OpenStreetMap can be fixed right at the source and shows up in the atlas with the next update.
